Traditions. What is one of your favorite traditions over Thanksgiving? Share in the comments!
Our ‘lil town just celebrated our 1️⃣1️⃣0️⃣th year of plopping a giant, lit tree smack dab in the middle of our downtown. We go every year (the day after Thanksgiving) and stand in the circle with hundreds of other people to sing Christmas carols and countdown to the lighting of the tree. I imagine it’s a lot like Rockefeller. 🎄😉 My family loves this tradition (maybe because it also includes flavored hot chocolate we bring with us).

A Restorative Blessing of Truths.
I found these words (original author unknown) and they were titled ‘Breakfast Benediction’ and while I completely agree this would be a fantastic way to start the day, I believe they have a place at any moment in our days. So, I renamed it. And aren’t these Truth statements restorative to our soul? It’s simply who we are because of who God is in us.

The reality and understanding of the ‘WITH-NESS’ of Christ is mind-boggling in all the best ways. No matter your current circumstance, try pausing and acknowledging the nearness of God. Even when He may feel distant, He is still near. Over and over in the Bible, God says He will never leave us (Matthew 28:20, for example). Different circumstances may feel more comfortable, but we can know and stand firm in the fact that His gentle presence remains with each of us always…through it all. What a gift.
Praying God’s presence, goodness & love fill you to overflowing today! May we be present to ‘what is’ and not get stuck in ‘what was’ or ‘what we think should be’.
Does it even get any better than this? I am so incredibly grateful for what I get to do through Defined…getting a front row seat to God moving in powerful ways is such a gift.

Dressing up is a creative outlet for me. My fam (& some friends) love a reason to wear a costume (most of these pics were for events, concerts etc.). We have tubs of options in our basement and jump at any chance to be ridiculous. Anyone else love to dress up?
I took a half-day retreat this morning…in my own backyard…in my hammock. Ended up falling asleep (!!!) and it was glorious. How do you recover from a heavy work week (I worked my church job all day Sat & Sun)? Do you build in time to ‘retreat’ and catch your breath? How do (or would) you choose to recover/retreat/rejuvinate? A morning like today is so rare but I soaked it up for all it’s worth! ☀️🍁

We have a print with these words hanging on our fridge as a simple reminder. Loving any one of these is a choice. Additionally, as empowered individuals with free will, we are able to step back and look at why we’re not loving an area.
Ask yourself these questions:
• Is what I don’t love in or out of my control?
• If IN my control, what tweaks am I *realistically* able to make that could move me in the direction of love?
• If OUT of my control, remember your heart posture IS in your control and God is able to grow love, soften hearts, bring clarity and direct us!

Do you ever feel STUCK? I feel most stuck when my creative juices aren’t flowing…but the flow slows to a trickle when I’m stuck — NOT a helpful cycle to be in. I made a list Friday of some things I want to act on and create for Defined and put some wheels on those things today! And you know what? The fog has lifted. I’m in a creative space again. Woot!

We do not walk alone. It’s easy to take the nearness of God for granted as we go about our days. But, God is SO near. He goes WITH us to our work, our classes, the school pickup line, the grocery store, our home, the bleachers. And God is an always good God. When we believe this, it brings peace and clarity. God’s perfect love drives out fear. When we walk in fear, we likely have a shallow understanding of the nearness…the WITHness of God.

While near Seattle last week for a church board we are on, Jason & I were gifted 3 incredible nights on Whidbey Island! Our cabin was right on the beach …perfect for sunsets, beach walks at low tide & pods of dolphins. We also went to Deception Pass where the ocean comes into the Sound and soaked up the woods (aka Jason hugged big trees) 😉. We love the Pacific Northwest & our people there!

Take a day off, friends! Drop a ✅ if you’re able to sabbath/rest this weekend! You can do it! Make the space!
Consider what falls in your ‘work’ category and what doesn’t! Paid jobs? Yes - that is work. Cooking/meal prep? Yes - also work for me (so we do take and bake pizzas every Sunday night). That might not be one for you! Maybe you love cooking and it brings you life! Awesome! Take a minute to define what feels like work and what doesn’t for YOU.
Perhaps we can make bragging about our rest as common as bragging about our busy-ness all the other days! 🤍
When I PLAN for these things and build them into my life in a really intentional way, I’m better for it (and so are those around me).
So - I will build in time in nature weekly, time to sit on my couch and breathe deep and read my Bible and time with a friend or friends. I will create/paint at least once a month (but ideally twice a month). I can be most fully who God created me to be with my family, too, and get that often in our home without scheduling.
What are your places and people and activities? How can you build more of that into your life? What if it only took 5 minutes a day? It might be as simple as blocking space on your calendar…then stick to it like an actual appointment! Share your plan in the comments! Or tips you have for others!

Decision-making is a real struggle for most. We have the opportunity to become aware of that struggle in order to make moves and wise choices in life…in order to NOT get stuck, but to keep moving. Noticing the struggle is the first step. THIS is where we find God’s voice and leading. THIS is where we find discernment. It does not help to beat ourselves up for the struggle, but to notice and name it then lean into discernment and God’s gentle voice.
Sometimes, it also helps to meet with someone to walk with through a season of discernment. If that’s you, reach out!

I also have a goal of sticking to the ‘what is’ instead of the ‘what was’. Summer used to be a completely different rhythm when our kids were younger. It has changed with jobs, licenses etc. I intend to do a better job of embracing the ‘what is’ in this season. 🤍

I really believe this. Many hobbies CAN be turned into a hustle and that’s great. But, I don’t believe we were created to make them ALL into hustles. Sometimes we have interests and hobbies JUST TO ENJOY THEM. To find REST and DELIGHT in the process of doing them because that’s how we are gifted!
I love to paint. I spent years not painting because the outcomes did not feel hangable or giftable. I was making it a (non-money-making) hustle. Once I realized that and worked through it, I discovered I loved the process of painting and it really is OK for me to paint…just…to paint. So, now I paint and just put it away! And my joy is found in the process of the hobby. My joy is not hinged on the outcome (or income from it!).
Just to re-iterate - some hobbies do become hustles and that is great. The important part is in the discerning. Fight the temptation to believe you need to make everything a hustle in order for it to be worth your time. 🤍

I’m going to be honest…we’ve had a rough week, so I’m choosing to find a win while caring deeply for my people. Not for the sake of faking it until I make it or slapping on a happy face when things are hard, but for the sake of keeping my eyes on my Savior. Because this, too, shall pass and this world is not our home.

Jason was out of town and our kids planned and executed one of the best Mother’s Days I’ve ever had. 🤍 Here is what I know to be true: watching and experiencing my kids working together toward something (surprising me, in this case) is one of the best gifts ever. I knew I loved it, but the truth of a mom’s heart longing to see friendship between her kids is REAL. So - perhaps I knew this to be true last year. Mother’s Day was definitely not the first time they’ve done this. BUT…the depth of that gift was not lost on me. And I LOVE to be surprised! 🤍

⭐️ The Pour Over. SHORT (10 minutes or less), unbiased news with a focus on Christ no matter the news. Released every M, W & F. I remember to listen MAYBE once a week.
⭐️ Being Human with Steve Cuss. He has really great insights. It’s been called ‘counseling in podcast form’.
⭐️ The Jess Connolly Podcast. This one is pretty specifically for women. Good, solid truths.
⭐️ The Goal Digger with Jenna Kutcher. For small business entrepreneurs.

What is something you need to add or shed in order to grow?
In all honesty, I’ve been shedding my own perception of others’ perception of me (again). Fear of ‘man’. I detest when these thoughts rear up. Fear of man is a strong way the enemy attempts to squelch who God made us to be and the things He calls us to do with that.
But: What happens when I show up as fully myself? Does it even matter what ‘man’ thinks then? Or only what God thinks about that freedom?
I’m shedding the oppression and weight of feeling squelched. I’m adding more and more freedom.

SEATTLE, WA!!! 🤍 Jason and I got to speak last weekend at a youth retreat outside of Seattle in the Mount Baker area (no pics of retreat to honor their privacy).
Incredible group of youth • Amazing team of volunteers • MIGHTY God at work.
We stayed for an extra 1.5 days to be with friends in Seattle and it was beautiful time together. Last pic is where we got to wait out our delays in Denver on our way home. Not too shabby. 🏔️
So super thankful for this opportunity. Join us in praying for the kids that surrendered their lives to Jesus and those who encountered Him in new ways. 🤍 God is so very good.

Imposter Syndrome: “The persistent inability to believe one’s success is deserved or has been legitimately achieved as a result of one’s own efforts or skills.”
Spent the weekend in Wisconsin speaking at a women’s retreat and what a gift it was. We laughed, we played, we rested, we prayed. Thank you, St John’s women, for the warm welcome! What’s your favorite birthday memory?
I have many. Even my snowed-in birthday yesterday was no exception. My 17-year old spent hours making this AH•MA•ZING cake. 🤍 A birthday that was simply unforgettable was when I turned 40, my 2 besties surprised me with a trip to AZ for a few days. I’m hard to surprise, but I LOVE SURPRISES so it was epic they pulled it off!

I’d like to challenge you to name 1 word that describes how you would like to feel at the beginning of 2024. Physical, Spiritual, Mental, Emotional. Any word.
And then take a minute to consider what, if anything, is in your control to make that happen. Is there something you can do or consider to move in that direction?
I want to feel fully present and fully alive. 2 super practical (& physical) things I can do/ have control over are to put my phone down more often and get better sleep.

What did you learn this year? About yourself, about God and His Word, about life? What did God teach you?
I feel like I’ve grown in trust and learned more about the importance of simple obedience this year. God continues to teach me about His deep and faithful trustworthiness and how I can partner with Holy Spirit daily in simple acts of obedience. Change may not always be immediate, but these simple acts add up.

What were some hope-builders this year?
What relationships and/or events grew your hope this year?
Hope can feel dangerous. Just ask the young couple unable to have a baby thus far. Or the friend for whom you pray and pray for healing. Or the parents of an adult child making poor choices. The list goes on…
Hope can be hard and sometimes feels dangerous. Our ultimate hope is found only in relationship with Jesus. Hope in Christ does not disappoint. Ever.
So. What built your hope this year? What encouraged your soul? Be dangerous and name it. 🤍
Thankful for each of you today. And thankful for that precious baby boy, Jesus. We will resume the 12 Days of Reflection tomorrow! 🎄

What do you want to do more of in 2024? What was something life-bringing for you in 2023 that you’d like to create space in 2024 to do even more of it? Then I’d love to hear 1 super practical small step toward that. HOW will we do more of ‘it’ if we don’t plan for it? So: what is your next small step toward more?

Day 7 of The 12 Days of Reflection
Oof. Limitations can be hard in and of themselves and sometimes even harder to admit. And? We all have them. Whether physical, mental, emotional or spiritual…we live with limitations. We are imperfect, finite beings after all.
I struggle with accepting my own limitations. As I age, I feel my body’s limitations increase. I have significant back issues that limit my adventurous spirit big time. Yesterday, those issues limited my walking and functionality.
There are 3 ways to respond to limitations…
• DENIAL: ‘I have no limitations. Nothing can stop me’ (hopeless and unrealistic)
• RESIGNATION: ‘Well, this is the way it is (terrible) and probably always will be, so why try?’ (this is a hopeless place to be)
• CONSENT: ‘This is where I am. What do I need as I live with this? What might/could God be doing through it?’ (this is the only realistic yet hopeful place to land. Living with the limitation, considering what you need right now and what God could do)
I am trying to live in consent. I waver between resignation & consent but - to my core - I want to live in hopeful spaces. Not solely hopeful for healing (but I’d take that in a heartbeat) but also hope in a God who loves me and meets me in my limitations in powerful ways. And I have found some practical strategies that help me move & function!

Day 6 of The 12 Days of Reflection
Is there a place, situation or group of people in your life you’d like to more fully ‘show up’ for? Where do you want to be more fully yourself and invest in the relationships around you?
I always want to answer this with ‘at home with my family’. They deserve it. And I do more consistently fully show up as fully myself with them than anyone else. So, I’m going to actually say Defined. I believe this is a calling and I do desire to honor that by more fully showing up and going after it! The transformations I have the honor of seeing are nothing short of incredible and I’m so excited to lean in and continue championing people toward that!
Day 5 of The 12 Days of Reflection
Had a stomach bug yesterday so I missed a day. 🤷🏼♀️ We’re just moving ahead. How did God surprise you this year?
He surprised me by His faithfulness and trustworthiness. I wish that wasn’t a surprise, but He does still surprise me with it! I hope to never be so used to the amazing ways He shows up that I am numb to it, but a joyful celebration instead of ‘surprise’ would be good. 😉
Day 3 of the 12 Days of Reflection!
How do you best rest? Like, real rest that fills you up as you feel the exhale. I’m a go-er but the older I get, the more I crave rest. I do not crave numbing out (which is sometimes, admittedly, where I land) but real rest.
I find it in a slow morning with a cup of coffee and a devotional or Bible. This is my favorite. I find it on water - in a kayak - with my husband or a friend. I find it at my table with watercolor paints. Especially if my kids join me.
Where do you find rest? And how do you make time for it? While it’s fulfilling and grows gratitude in me, it always leaves me wanting more. 🤍

This is a great time of year to consider what is ACTUALLY on your plate. Is there anything you are just assuming is on your plate or an unrealistic expectation of things on your plate? What’s 1 thing you could remove?

Home from Mississippi and WOW • WHAT • A • WEEKEND!!! I had the absolute privilege of speaking at a women’s retreat in the woods outside of Jackson.
God was and is so clearly on the move in, through and for these women and I consider myself blessed to know each and every one of them.
From worship to impactful prayer ministry to laughter to breakthroughs, we praise His holy name for it all.
Thank you, Revive, for inviting and welcoming me! 🤍 It was a gift to be with you. May we make space to sit in Jesus’ presence and be ‘SO SHE’ women!
I’m not sure where this originated, but I can’t stop laughing. 😂 It’s so corny, but I like corny.
I love this prayer and the idea of giving ALL of ourselves to God…the lack along with the goodness; the tired along with the zeal; the uncertainty along with the certainty. It is all kindling for drawing closer to Him. It may feel like nothing, but He wants that too. May we lay it all out with great vulnerability and raw honesty. He wants it all. 🤍 He’s a pro at making something out of nothing.

Are you where you want to be? Are you doing the things you feel equipped and called to? Sometimes change is needed. And? Sometimes it’s not! What if your placement in life at the moment/for this season just needs a fresh infusion of passion?
• I’ve coached a number of people into launching non-profits and new businesses.
• I’ve coached women longing or searching for purpose & passion.
• Mostly, though, I’ve coached women who simply need a fresh perspective on where they’re at…a reminder of the passion they have or have had. An infusion of passion, if you will.

Last week, Jason & I had the opportunity to speak at the Regional Gathering for Christian Camp & Conference Association (CCCA) leaders at one of our favorite places (Riverside).
I love getting to speak and do ministry with my hubs. It is such a gift. And we love camping ministry and those that lead in that arena. Camp can be such a powerful place of ministry. It can transform one’s faith and view of God!

Today is a ‘recover & prep’ day! I took the morning to catch up on a Bible study I’m doing with my sister & mom, do some Defined admin & communication and prep for a women’s retreat I’m speaking at in Mississippi next month! I truly consider it an honor to be asked to speak anywhere. A couple weeks ago, I had the privilege of speaking at my own church’s women’s retreat with the theme ‘Nourish’. We got to dig deep, connect, play, be nourished, get real, laugh and make memories. 🤍
There is such value in retreating with people…it deepens friendships and connects people in ways that exceed a normal day. The time and space set aside to be nourished by our one and only nourisher, Jesus, is a sweet, sweet space to be in.
Go to a retreat! And then take the posed selfie ON the gas station’s brontosaurus! 😂😜

What constitutes ‘rest’ for you? Do you have certain things you do or places you go that help your body & soul rest? How do you build rest into your life when a vacation isn’t possible? And why is it so hard? What specific obstacles do you have & how do you find yourself overcoming them? I really want to know!
I like to think about rest as soul-renewing. The opposite of soul-depleting. If I took my rest as seriously as any ‘hustle’, I would (1) sleep more (2) sit and breathe deep in God’s presence more (3) get on, in or by some water or mountains or beautiful scenery (4) feel a deep, deep peace in my core…a soul renewed. 🤍 My biggest obstacle is myself. I could schedule it in/block time off in my calendar. I could put all electronics away so I’m not tempted to just ‘check in’ on email quick in the evenings.
What would you be willing to try in order to take your rest more seriously?

1 year + 5 months ago, I shared my behind-the-scenes setup for when I do online coaching and all of that has remained true…UNTIL TODAY!!! I now have an off-site office/room to try out online meetings in as needed and I am beyond giddy and incredibly thankful!

Sometimes I cry when I read these because of God’s goodness. So incredibly thankful for the ‘work’ God has called me into and the ways in which He chooses to move.🤍

Our summer trip took us to some really incredible National Parks/Monument: Tetons, Yellowstone, Teddy Roosevelt, Rushmore, Wind Cave & Badlands (+ the Black Hills).
Incredible sights. Yet this 👇🏼 was one of my favorite moments. Drinking coffee and soaking up the Tetons from our campsite. This trip was CHALK FULL of challenges for us, but one of my highlights was rallying and pivoting as a family…over and over and over and over. 😉 We have some great memories. 🫶🏼

After a completely fabulous morning speaking and facilitating a mini-retreat with the women of Des Moines Vineyard Church Saturday, I had the privilege of attending a fundraiser for the nonprofit @walkwithyounonprofit I coached Kylie Collins who founded this incredible organization. She is doing great things and leading in incredible ways. Her heart is so FOR bereaved parents experiencing child and infant loss. If you know someone who is or has experienced a tragedy as such, please follow their FB and Insta pages and connect your person with Kylie and her team. They offer services they might not even know they need from assistance in funeral planning and professional photography to parent mentors who have walked through similar loss.

It’s really one of the few things we have actual control over. How we react to what is happening around us.
I am far from having perfected it, but when I hit pause to think about how I want to react, I often land in the ‘respond’ category which I greatly prefer. When we can respond versus react, it means we are doing so with thoughtfulness and care.
Reacting insinuates impulsiveness.
Responding insinuates patient thought.
The power of the pause is a real thing. My mind and heart are able to make the shift to respond.
